Those who would translate ῥίζαas “cause” or “source” feel that in the terms “Root and Offspring” we have a reference to Jesus’ divine and human natures. That idea appears to stand behind the translation found in GWN, “I am David’s Creator and Descendant.” While that is an interesting translation, in the light of Isaiah 11:1, 10 and 53:2 both references appear to point to Jesus’ human ancestry.
